Language Acquisition in Animals
Chimpanzee and Human
Communication Institute — Visit Central Washington University's
Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute (CHCI), and learn more about
Washoe, her "adopted son" Loulis, and three other chimps (Dar, Moja and
Tatu) that have learned to use American Sign Language to communicate with
humans. You might even want to consider applying for the 10-week
Summer Apprenticeship Program.
The Gorilla Foundation
— The Gorilla Language Project, or Project Koko, is the longest continuous
interspecies communication project of its kind in the world. Koko
(the most famous of the trio), Michael, and Ndume are three Western Lowland
gorillas involved in this study of language acquisition.
